Although the nutrition and health industry was affected by unfavorable factors such as COVID-19 and China-US trade frictions in the first half of 2020, the import and export trade achieved double growth. According to the statistics of the China Chamber of Commerce of Medicines & Health Products Importers & Exporters (CCCMHPIE), the total import and export of dietary nutritional supplements reached three billion US dollars, of which export value was 990 million US dollars in the first half of 2020, a year-on-year increase of 10.4%; import value reached 2.01 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 32.1%.

Overview of export

Although affected by a variety of unfavorable factors, the export of dietary nutritional supplements still maintained a growth trend in the first half of 2020. Asia is the main export market for dietary nutritional supplements, followed by North America and Europe, which account for 87% of the total and are highly concentrated. Among them, the export value of Asia was 540 million US dollars, which has a significant increase, a year-on-year increase of 20.3%, accounting for 55% of the total. In Asian market, ASEAN is the main export market, with an export value of 230 million US dollars, but the Middle East market has a larger export potential, a year-on-year increase of 43.1%. In the European market, the European Union is the main export market.

From the perspective of specific exporting countries, Hong Kong, the United States, Japan, Myanmar and Philippines are the main export regions of China dietary nutritional supplements. The export value is respectively 170 million US dollars, 150 million US dollars, 50 million US dollars, 40 million US dollars and 40 million US dollars, the concentration rate of the top five markets is 46%. Among them, it should be noted that the total export value of Hong Kong has increased by 57.4%, surpassing the United States and becoming the largest export market for dietary nutritional supplements.

Overview of import

In 2020, the import of dietary nutritional supplements still maintained a good growth. This is partly due to Chinese consumers’ growing health consciousness and partly due to the epidemic outbreaks this year, which have increased consumers’ concern for their health and unleashed demand for quality health products.

From the perspective of the specific categories of import, bird’s nest products have a significant increased, with an import value of 190 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 69%. In addition, seal oil products have a greater growth, a year-on-year increase of 213.9%.

From the perspective of the import market, the main import markets for dietary nutritional supplements are Asia, North America, Oceania and Europe, accounting for 99% of the total. Among them, Asia is the main import market, with an import value of 700 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 42.0%, accounting for 35% of the entire import market. Followed by North America, the import value is 520 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 45.2%, and import prices have a year-on-year increase of 97.7%. The import values from both Oceania and Europe have increased, 22.6% and 15.9% respectively.

From the perspective of specific importing countries, the top ten countries of dietary nutritional supplements import value have increased to different degrees. Among them, Indonesia’s import value has a year-on-year increase of 95.3%, and that of Hong Kong has a year-on-year increase of 87.4%. The United States surpassed Australia to become the largest importing country of dietary nutrient supplements again, with an import value of 460 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 43.9%. Import prices also have a significant increase, with a year-on-year increase of 97.0%. Followed by Australia, the import value is 420 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 22.6%.
